Is smoke coming from your air conditioner during the cold times in Florida? Here is why it's happening.

** ATTENTION: THIS IS NOT THE ONLY REASON FOR SMOKE! **

Even in Florida it gets cold, sometimes VERY cold. Believe it or not Florida can experience similar temperatures that one would see 1,200 miles north. It does on occasion get SO cold ice will form on the outside of the heat pump, it's already working overtime because of the current cold time of year we're used to experiencing, when it dips to these dramatic temperatures it begins to work EVEN HARDER, ice will form on the heat pump which is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. The heat pump will sense the ice and switch itself into defrost mode and that is what causes the unit to begin smoking.

Behind the scenes the fan has stopped spinning and the valves end up holding the refrigerant inside (you've probably also heard the groan and shutter noises) so the unit begins to smoke (it's actually just steam), be sure to leave the unit ON! It may be scary to watch smoke billow out of your unit but it's normal. Once the defrost job is complete the unit will resume its normal operation.
